I am probably a descendant of one of Dr. Jones' alleged killers. In every cultural environment, there are certain taboos that most members recognize. I can only assume that his handling of the tribal leader was a violation of the unwritten laws or customs of the tribe. In addition, it appears that Dr. Jones was a very hateful and predjudiced individual. Although I do not condone the actions of my "forebears", I do not totally blame them for what they did to "Dr. Jones". The fact that their sentences were commuted showed that there was a great mitigating circumstance for their actions. It could even have been self-defense on their part since "Dr. Jones" fired his revolver. After you are struck with a bolo in the eye (head), speared in the arm and abdomen, it's almost physically impossible to draw your weapon and shoot back at your assailants. No one really knows who did what first. But then, people write subjective articles to favor cetain individuals such as Dr. Jones.
Your article is yet the most comprehensive and factual portrayal of what happened more than a century ago.
I thank you for providing a more objective view of that incident.
